I CANNOT Believe It... Again!
07/15/2003

I cannot believe Dat Phan beat Dave Mordal on Last Comic Standing. I don't know where they find these audiences.

Dave's set was hilarious. It was smart, but not too smart (meaning over the head or elitist). It was well delivered. Dat, on the other hand, as nice a guy as he might be, just wasn't funny. To be honest, during his set, as he began bringing up his childhood and seemed to miss a line and then laughed at the joke that he was about to tell, I was reminded of that scene in Punchline when Tom Hanks loses it on stage.

I just don't get it. Was it anti-Minnesota bigotry? Is the Asian-imitating-his-mother shtick really that appealing to people?

ADDENDUM (08/06/03):
I've noticed this old post getting a number of hits now that Dat Phan has won the whole shebang. For thoughts on that... umm... turn of events, click here.

I cannot believe what I saw tonight. NBC lost a viewer for this timeslot in me and I'm sure the majority of people feel this way. This is defintely not "Last Comic Standing" anymore, as they have just lost the funniest of them all - Dave Mordel. What has happened to America's sense of humour?

Well, Vaughan, I don't know how much NBC can be blamed. (Although I do kinda wonder about the outcome, because it didn't seem as if even the audience was laughing as much at Dat as at Dave.)

I think they made a mistake in not including more stand-up, because at this point, I've forgotten the acts of everybody who hasn't done a competition. I remember thinking Rich Vos was funny when he did the set that got him into the house, but I don't remember a thing about it. For that reason, it's difficult to feel to enthused about most of them.

Anyway, I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Dave Mordal, just as I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Rob Cantrell.

Before the set, I told my wife I felt Dat would win because of his nationality and the age of the crowd. Dave didn't have a chance. I also believe, as Justin does, that Dave won the competition in a walk.

I don't know what happened. Either 70% of the crowd was from Florida and hit the wrong button, or they intentionally went out and found the 50 people that think Dat Phan is funny and put them in the audience. What ever happened it was a great injustice. Dat Phan is not funny, nothing against the guy, he seems nice, but my father is nice and he isn't funny either.

Anyway I will not be watching this show anymore. I even took the time to send an email to NBC and express my displeasure. If you would like to do the same its: LastComicStanding@nbc.com
